In That Moment
Love is a fickle thing. One minute you have it in your
grasp, you can feel its palpable warmth, but then the next, it’s slipped away,
fallen like rain through your fingers until it fades into the earth. Of course,
one would think a flower could grow from such rich soil, but is earth ruined by
falling tears really all that fertile?
I suppose experience is a way to truly water the soil. I’m
supposed to live life, right? To find love at some point in my journey? At
times I feel like the cards have fallen just right, that I am night unto
romantic fulfillment. But then the celestial card dealer shuffles the deck, and
my king flits through the seemingly careless fingers of the dealer with no
regard to how I feel.
Then the dealer whispers something to me. He says,
patience. I’m not done with you yet.
There’s a spark of hope in that whisper. With a gust of
breath, the spark flees the dealer’s lips and I catch it. A little firefly in
my palm, just bright enough to reveal the crevasses in my skin, to show my
humanity.
In yet another twist of fate the spark bounds from my
fingertips and flies from me, flies to a destination I have not seen. In
anguished desperation, I follow. I follow because I am not going to give up
this easy. I can hear the shuffle of the cards and I’m running because love is
not something you walk to. Love is something to sprint towards, to heave
yourself full-tilt into the bowels of time and space and hope that something
good will be waiting for you on the other side.
So I tumble down broken roads and false promises, through
the mists of thin hope and the adventures of youth. I run and I don’t stop, in
fear that that little spark will go out.
There will be moments when I think I’ve finally found it
but one utterance of adoration shatters the supposed reality of what I feel. I
stumble blindly, trying to find something concrete to hold on to. That’s what I
want, after all. Someone to hold, and someone to hold me.
And suddenly a ray of sun falls and I can see. The spark
dances and I see it merge with the heart of the girl I’ve been looking for. In
that moment the cards fall perfectly. The king finds its match, its invaluable
queen.
And we fall in love.
And we hold each other.
And we see each other.
And when our lips meet, in that moment I am the luckiest
and happiest man alive. In that moment I am whole.
They say the course of true love never did run smooth.
But I believe that a moment, one pure moment, is worth all the bruising and
bleeding and falling.
Sometimes we have to let the cards fall just right.
